kitchen gadgets: bench scraper

Beware! I built a white box with my father this week and now am photographing every single thing in my kitchen that I love so that I can tell you about them. Start saving money now because I am a Kitchen Gadget Addict (KGA) and hope to convince you to become one too. :)

Because I didn’t grow up with a bench scraper, I had no idea how cool this particular tool is. Now that I own one, I use it all the time. I use it to transfer veggies from a cutting board into a pot of soup. I use it to scrape flour off the counter so I can avoid making my sponge all gummy when cleaning up from some baking project. I use it to salvage rather messy desserts.

I paid $4 for my bench scraper at Ross. If you are so inclined, you could pick one up on Amazon or at your local kitchen store. Keep it handy in your kitchen and you’ll find yourself reaching for it again and again!

Bench scrapers are also usefull for portioning dough (risen or not – that’s why the edge is slightly sharp) and scraping away the top layer of a wood cutting board (soak the board in water and scrape like you would with sandpaper; this will remove a thin layer of wood which might contain bacteria and/or might have soaked up juices of whatever you’ve chopped, imparting off-flavors on anything else you chop on the board.)
I also consider a bench scraper to be a “must have” for any active kitchen. It is a bit more than a simple “gadget”; it is a “device”. ;-)

Because of you, I recently purchased a strawberry huller and a cherry pitter. The cherry pitter has definitely earned it’s keep. The strawberry huller hasn’t had the opportunity, but I hope it will soon.
I’ve been thinking about getting a scraper, now it looks like I’ll have to! :)

I am sorry that I deprived you of the joys of using a bench scraper when you were growing up! My vintage pancake spatula does the same job.

I think you should rename this particular gadget to something more “kitchen” friendly! :) Thanks for explaining what to do with it though, I have one from our wedding and it just sits in the drawer. Now I might have to drag it out and give it some attention.

Great site. A lot of useful information here. I’m sending it to some friends!
